Infection with the variola virus begins with an incubation period that can be from 7-17 days (on average 12-14 days). What are the signs and symptoms of smallpox? It can also be spread by touching the skin rash, sores and scabs of an infected person, or by sharing contaminated clothing, towels or bedding. This generally requires direct and fairly prolonged face-to-face contact. Smallpox is most efficiently spread from one person to another by breathing in airborne respiratory droplets from an infected person. The variola virus emerged in human populations thousands of years ago and humans are the only natural host. Where does smallpox come from and how is it spread? Variola minor is a much less common form with an estimated death rate of less than 1%. Variola major is the most common and severe form and has a death rate of about 30%. There are 2 clinical types of smallpox, variola major and variola minor. Renewed interest in smallpox is taking place, as there is concern that the variola virus may be used as an agent of bioterrorism. The only remaining known variola virus isolates are stored at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US and at the Vektor Institute in Russia. ![]() The last naturally occurring case of smallpox was in Somalia in 1977. Widespread vaccination between 19 has led to the global eradication of the virus and in 1980 the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared smallpox eradicated. ![]() It has been around for thousands of years and has been associated with many deadly epidemics. Smallpox is a highly contagious and sometimes deadly disease that is caused by infection with the variola virus.
